Beat was founded as the Eating Disorders Association, and helps people suffering from eating disorders and their carers with support.
They contribute towards research and work with healthcare professionals to improve their understanding of the thoughts and feelings and root causes of what contributes toward the illness.
Recent research from the NHS information centre showed that up to 6.4% of adults displayed signs of an eating disorder (Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey, 2007). This research suggested that up to 25% of those showing signs of an eating disorder were male.
They provide a 24 hour, 365 day helpline and an online service to help people who need immediate support.
