Le Colombier

French Tourism Website

Le Colombier (with the “Green Key” and “Quality Tourism” labels) is situated to the north of La Rochelle (east of La Roche-sur-Yon) 50 km from the Atlantic Coast and 2 naturist beaches in a hilly area ideal for walks or bike rides. It is a 50-hectare area, covering a valley with a stream, lake and meadows surrounded by 14 hectares of forests, ideal for couples and families with children (infants to teenagers).

160 campsite pitches are available, as well as tents and bungalows for rent. Its central section, the focus for activities, is built around an ancient seigneurial farm and its tower, dating from the Middle Ages, and a large heated swimming pool.   Ideal starting point for discovering a part of the Marais Poitevin, nicknamed the “green Venice”.

This natural environment has received the “Grand Site de France” label, which recognises it as a site with exceptional natural heritage. While walking, you will discover unique flora and fauna (including fish such as the eel, the symbol of the park). Boat trips are also on offer, with or without a guide. There are several typical villages to visit in this unique area. A good place to start is the esplanade of the Abbaye Saint-Pierre de Maillezais, perched on a rocky spur with superb views of the Marais Poitevin.

Several events are organised amid the ruins of the cathedral, including “Le chantier”, (reconstruction of a morning’s work for labourers), and “La Nuit des Bâtisseurs” (in summer, every Tuesday at 10 pm). A few kilometres away you will discover the Grammont priory in Saint Prouant.

There are several good places to visits with children, including Château de Tiffauges, known as Bluebeard’s Castle (Gilles de Rais, companion of Joan of Arc): as well as visiting the fortress, there are several events organised in summer; Logis de la Chabotterie in Saint-Sulpice le Verdon, Futuroscope in Poitiers, 90 minutes from the naturist centre; La Rochelle and its aquarium; Le Puy du Fou
